About the Artist
Pianist Julia Hamos, who has American and Hungarian roots, explores the essence of music ranging from Bach to contemporary composers in a remarkable way through her repertoire. As a soloist and chamber musician, she has developed her artistry in the spirit of the Hungarian classical music tradition while also finding common ground with her contemporaries.

Julia is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied with Christopher Elton, and of Mannes College of Music in New York, where she studied with Richard Goode. She studied with Sir András Schiff at the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin and at the Kronberg Academy, where her studies were generously supported by the Henle Foundation. During her studies, she also collaborated with Daniel Barenboim, including in a series of filmed masterclasses on Beethoven’s piano sonatas and string sonatas. She has been commissioned to represent him at the 2023 Ruhr Piano Festival and perform Beethoven’s Op. 110. In addition, she worked with the composer at the Budapest Music Center on György Kurtág’s 8 Pieces, Op. 3.
Julia is in high demand internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. She has performed at the Pierre Boulez Hall in Berlin, Wigmore Hall in London, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York, the Liszt Academy in Budapest, and other concert halls across Europe and overseas. She has given recitals and chamber music concerts at the Krzyzowa Festival in Kreisau, Poland, as well as at the Trasimeno Music Festival in Italy, the Spoleto Festival in South Carolina, the Prussia Cove Festival in Cornwall, as part of the Verbier Festival Academy, the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival in North Carolina, the Nouveaux Horizons Festival of Contemporary Music in Aix-en-Provence, the Moab Festival in Utah, at the Kneisel Hall Festival in Maine, at the Ravinia Steans Institute in Illinois, at the annual September Festival in Kronberg, and at the “Chamber Music Connects the World” festival in collaboration with Tabea Zimmermann and Christian Tetzlaff.
She is the recipient of the Royal Academy of Music’s Sterndale Bennett Prize for Romantic Music and the Mannes School of Music’s Fidelman Prize for Contemporary Music in New York, and she won the Grand Prix at the International Virtuoso Competition in New York City. She is also the recipient of the Durini Prize for outstanding talent, which was awarded in Milan in the spring of 2024.
She has already appeared on BBC Radio 3, Deutschlandfunk, National Public Radio in the U.S., and Bartók Rádió in Budapest, and has been featured in publications such as Gramophone Magazine as a “One to Watch” and in Concerti Magazine.
At the invitation of Sir András Schiff, she performed throughout Europe in the “Building Bridges” concert series during the 2022–23 season and beyond. Her most recent notable appearances as a soloist and chamber musician include concerts with the National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR) in Katowice, at Wigmore Hall, at the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall with Tabea Zimmermann and members of the Kronberg Academy, at the Magyar Zene Ház and MÜPA in Budapest, at the Stadtcasino Basel, at the Cologne Philharmonie, at the Luxembourg Philharmonie, and at the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg. She performed the Ligeti Piano Concerto at Berlin’s Boulez Saal with the Boulez Ensemble and Matthias Pintscher, as well as at the Spoleto Festival, where she also performed with the Castalian Quartet. She recently completed a recording of the Mozart concertos with Howard Griffiths and the Camerata Schweiz for Alpha Classics.
In 2024, Julia signed a contract with the record label naïve Records to produce a series of solo recordings over the next five years. In March 2025, she made her recital debut at the Pierre Boulez Saal, followed by a performance of Boulez’s *Sur Incises* with Matthias Pintscher.
Highlights of last summer included four-hand works with Sir András Schiff at the Casals Forum in Kronberg, Berg’s Chamber Concerto at St. John’s Waterloo in London with Leonard Elschenbroich, and a recital at the Lockenhaus Festival. Her upcoming engagements include her U.S. debut in the Hayes Piano Series in Washington, D.C., presented by Washington Performing Arts; at the Lucerne Festival with Mozart’s Concerto K. 482 and the MÁV Orchestra in the Great Hall of the Mozarteum in Salzburg; at the Mendelssohn Festival in the Pierre Boulez Saal; and with Sir András Schiff in the Società del Quartetto series in Milan. Her debut album, “Ellis Island,” was released in June 2025 and received high critical acclaim, including Gramophone Magazine’s “Editor’s Choice” award. Julia currently serves as an assistant to Sir András Schiff in his program for young pianists at the Kronberg Academy.
